After Completion of Endodontic Treatment

Endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration.  A complete report with x-rays will be sent to your referring dentist.  You should chew on the other side until your dentist has placed a permanent restoration, often a crown.  Please telephone your dentist for that appointment as soon as possible, no longer than 4 weeks.

Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for a couple days to a couple weeks from the inflammation associated with normal healing.  This tenderness is common and is no cause for alarm.  You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen.  In the overwhelming vast majority of cases, over-the-counter pain medication can provide satisfactory comfort.   Antibiotics are usually unnecessary, the cleaning out of the tooth does far more to eliminate infection than any medication.  A heating pad is often soothing.
